Overview

LexFloatServer is the licensing server software that leases floating licenses to your app. It is typically installed on a computer in your customer's local network. If you have multiple products, each product requires its own instance of LexFloatServer.

LexFloatServer is lightweight and fast, so it runs well even on an old machine connected to the local network.

Deployment considerations

• Where to run the server. LexFloatServer is node-locked to the machine it runs on, and its multi-process detection stops a second instance from starting on the same host, whether or not the host is online. If the host has internet access, the server can run anywhere, including inside a virtual machine or container, because it keeps validating its own license against the Cryptlex servers. In an offline or air-gapped network, the device fingerprint alone has to prevent clones, so choose the host accordingly: a physical machine is the safe default, a cloud VM also works well because cloud providers expose unique instance identifiers that make the fingerprint reliable, and a container running inside a Kubernetes cluster fingerprints reliably too. Avoid offline on-premises VMs that can be cloned freely, since a clone could lease seats from a single license undetected. Your licensed app, as a floating client, can always run inside containers and VMs.
• There is no built-in high availability or failover. LexFloatServer continuously persists its lease state on disk, so after a crash or reboot it comes back knowing which licenses are leased. To ride out short outages, set the lease duration long enough that clients keep running on their current lease while the server machine recovers.
