Overview

Once you have chosen a licensing model, this section covers the day-to-day operations of running your licensing, including creating licenses for customers, keeping subscriptions current, and controlling access over each license's lifetime.

The license lifecycle

  1. Define your defaults with a license template. Every license inherits its configuration, such as type, activations, subscription interval, and security settings, from a template, so you set these values once.
  2. Create licenses for your customers through the admin portal or the Web API, typically as part of your order automation.
  3. Keep subscriptions current. For time-based licenses, configure the subscription interval and renew licenses on payment. See Subscription Licensing.
  4. Attach your own data to licenses, users, and activations with metadata, and track consumption with meter attributes for usage-based models.
  5. Control access when something changes. Temporarily block or permanently invalidate a license with suspension and revocation.
  6. Govern updates by linking a maintenance policy that defines how long, and for which versions, the customer receives software updates.

To find out when a license, an activation, or a user was last active, see Activity Timestamps.
